In 2014, insurers paid approximately 100,000 lightning claims. The average value of these claims was $7,400. This is 25% higher than previous year due to nature of and cost of new computers and televisions.
How can we as residents of Arkansas protect ourselves from these claims?
-Lightning Rods - they don't protect from the strike, but drive it safely away from your home if properly installed.
-Surge protectors - though not fool proof, they can prevent many potential issues from a lightning strike.
-Stay away from plumbing (toilets, sinks, and faucets) which make good conductors.
-Stay off the phone - 4% to 5% of people stuck by lightning were talking on their corded phones
Remember if you hear thunder it's time to go inside.
