So what are the odds of an earthquake occurring in the New Madrid zone of the central United States?
I was truly shocked to read that modern research indicates the probability of an earthquake exceeding magnitude 6.0 in the next 50 years to be 25%-40%.
According to Missouri's insurance regulators, the U.S. Geological Survey estimates over the next 50 years there is a 7%-10% probability of a magnitude 7.5 or greater occurring in the New Madrid Zone.
A 7.5+ would likely result in the largest natural disaster in recorded history of the United States. In fact, the estimates put this event in the 100B+ range making it up to 4 times damaging as the Northridge quake in the 90's.
Don't risk it. Consider purchasing earthquake insurance if your live in the central United States and own commercial or residential properties. It's just that simple.
